The Great Revealing
You can’t unsee this
My wife and I have had several conversations reflecting on our current cultural climate. In considering what our family, city, province, and nation have experienced since March 2020, we have seen how COVID-19 (both the virus itself and the responses from government and individuals) has essentially touched every single person in some way. Everyone has experienced some degree of change, and for many, those changes are permanent.
During one such conversation, my wife remarked, “A lot has been revealed since March 2020.” People have been hard-pressed - forced to face difficulties and hardships they could have never anticipated. The unavoidable truth is that one’s character and actual beliefs are revealed when under pressure. Who you really are, what you are really made of, and what you really believe to be true will inevitably rise to the surface of your life and be put on display for others to observe. You may be able to hide these parts of you when life is easy and pain-free, but when the heat is turned up, the true nature of your worldview and your integrity are exposed.
My wife and I agreed, to our disappointment, that we have seen some sub-biblical and even illogical views espoused by our loved ones, both friends and family members. What we have seen exposed in our world is, while not totally surprising, still discouraging.
Peeling back the layers
Indeed, with regard to the whole COVID-19 colossus, there has been a “Great Revealing.” This revealing is not one of new things, but old things, things that have been present for a long time, but have now been brought to the forefront.
Over the course of this blog post series, I want to discuss 5 of the issues that have been revealed in our world, truths that have been exposed in the hearts and minds of individuals and our society at large. By way of introduction, they are:
1. Statism is a real religion
2. People want to be mastered
3. Darwinian Evolutionists are false professors
4. Christians have poor Ecclesiology (doctrine of the church)
5. People are terrified of death
I also want to suggest how followers of Jesus ought to respond to these issues from a Biblical foundation. There are right and wrong ways for Christians to respond to these new-yet-old realities. Our beliefs about God and how they affect our lives are not relegated to Sunday morning services; they are to rule our families and determine how we respond to our culture.
