An honest look at history Colonization is defined as, “an act or instance of colonizing, such as the establishing of a colony, or the subjugation of a people or area especially as an extension of state power.” Christopher Columbus opened the way for Europe to have colonies in North America. Great Britain had colonies in India, Jamaica, Hong Kong, and many countries which are still a part of the Commonwealth, such as Canada and Australia. Spain once had colonies in North and South America. The Ottoman Empire controlled much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. History is full of empires conquering other nations and creating colonies. This has been the case in every continent among varying people groups over time.
